APHOGEE TWO STEP PROTEIN TREATMENT REVIEW
I’ve been experiencing some hair woes. I recently talked about how when I was in Nicaragua the top of my hair got pretty sun damaged. After some deep conditioning and using Aloe Vera on my hair it started to return back to normal. All you naturals know how natural hair is though. Once you figure one thing out something else goes wrong. *eye roll* You seriously never stop learning when it comes to natural hair. It’s amazing and annoying all at the same time.
About two months ago while styling my hair, I noticed on both sides of my head the hair behind my ears was drier than normal. No matter how much I would moisturize, those two patches of my hair remained frizzy and felt like straw. I had no idea what was going on. I told myself that those are just my problem areas and that I’d just have to deal with it. Rewind to about a week ago, I had had enough. Something was wrong and I needed to figure out what it was. So of course I go to the one place that has all the answers. Good old Google! My not so extensive research told me that I was lacking protein! BINGO! That HAD to be it. I NEVER do protein treatments. I’m a Nazi about deep conditioning. But protein. Pfffttt. I couldn’t tell you the last one I’d done wrong. Actually I don’t think I’ve ever done one for that matter. The protein treatment that was recommended was ApHogee’s Two Step Protein Treatment. I immediately hopped on Amazon and ordered it. I mean that’s what prime is for right? Now fast forward to last Friday. I cleared my morning schedule to stay home specifically so I could do my hair. I was so super excited to get this protein in and have my hair back to normal. I figured it might take me more than one treatment but I had faith I would see SOME difference from the first treatment.
So I proceeded to get to work. My research told me to start by washing my hair with a sulfate shampoo. Check. Then I was told to soak up some of the excess water with a t-shirt. (Don’t tell my dad.) Check. This is where the protein came in. I applied the ApHogee Two-Step Protein Treatment from root to tip. After making sure all of my hair was covered, I sat under a hooded dryer for 20 minutes. After coming from under the dryer my hair was extremely hard to the touch which is how the article I read said it would be. I rinsed my hair then applied the ApHogee Balancing Moisturizer over my hair and let it sit for 3 minutes. After rinsing that the article stressed that it was very important to deep condition after doing treatment. So I deep conditioned and then styled like I normally would. The results? Well why don’t I show you the results……
-__-. EPIC. FAIL. Like what is that?! Protein overload, that’s what it is. A friend of mine mentioned that there were lots of reviews about that particular protein treatment and that lots of people had had the same results as me. That’s exactly what I get for not doing more research. After sharing my failure, a stylist recommended that I do an overnight hot oil treatment for as many nights as I needed in order to restore the moisture back in my hair. The struggle. I did the hot oil treatment for two nights in a row, with great results, and that’s when something dawned on me. I needed to put oil back into my routine! That’s like natural hair 101. I had just been using a leave in conditioner and jelly type of styler. No oils. My hair was trying to tell me what it needed but in true Darrica fashion I didn’t listen. As for the protein treatments……yea I’m gonna pass on those for now. At least the one I tried. My hair didn’t like it at all and the reaction it had was very disappointing. I think I’ll stick to my current routine, which I’ll share soon, and only do protein treatments if I feel my hair ABSOLUTELY needs it. Lesson learned!
